Granite FAQs

Expectations

Is granite outdated?

Granite remains widely used. Current preferences tend toward lighter colors, softer movement, and contemporary finishes.

Outdoor & Environmental Use

Can granite be used for exterior cladding?

Yes. Granite is commonly used for exterior cladding due to durability and weather resistance.

Is granite the best stone for outdoor countertops?

Granite is one of the most commonly recommended materials for outdoor countertops due to their durability, resistance to temperature changes, and ability to withstand UV exposure.

Heat & Durability

Can you put hot pans directly on granite countertops?

Granite is generally heat-resistant and can tolerate occasional hot pans, although using trivets is truly the answer. It is recommended as a general rule for both natural stone and engineered stone to not exceed 450-500 degrees directly. Stone expands and contracts just like engineered stone, so no surface is completely heat-resistant.

Is a granite countertop durable?

Yes. Granite is among the most durable natural stone options, offering strong resistance to heat and scratching.

Can granite chip?

Granite is durable but edges and corners of granite and all natural stones can chip under impact.

Difference Between Granite & Quartz

What’s the difference between granite and quartz countertops?

Granite is a natural stone with unique variation and strong heat resistance, while quartz is engineered for consistency and requires less maintenance. Granite typically needs periodic sealing, whereas quartz does not. Both are durable, but granite may be better for high-heat environments, while quartz offers a more uniform appearance.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Does granite need to be sealed every year?

Sealing frequency depends on stone density and use.

Is dark granite harder to maintain?

Dark polished granite may show fingerprints and residue more readily than textured or patterned surfaces.

Can granite stain?

Granite is generally stain-resistant but still benefits from proper sealing.

What cleaners should I avoid on stone countertops?

Avoid harsh or acidic cleaners such as vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or abrasive scrubs on natural stone. These can damage the sealant or surface. Instead, use pH-neutral cleaners designed specifically for stone to maintain the finish and longevity.

Do all stone countertops need to be sealed?

Most natural stone countertops, including granite, marble, and quartzite, benefit from sealing to help protect against stains and moisture. Engineered quartz does not require sealing because it is non-porous. Most but not all quartz materials list sealing as something that will void the warranty.

How often should stone countertops be sealed?

Sealing frequency depends on the material and usage. Many natural stones should be sealed once every 1–2 years, although some denser stones may require less frequent sealing. A simple water test can help determine when resealing is needed.
