Quartzite FAQs

Expectations

Why do some quartzites look like marble?

Quartzite often develops flowing veining and softer coloration while maintaining greater hardness than many marbles.

How do I know if a slab is true quartzite?

Stone naming conventions can vary within the industry. Reviewing technical characteristics and viewing slabs in person helps clarify performance expectations.

Stone Sourcing & Suppliers

How does Da Vinci Marble source natural stone slabs?

Da Vinci Marble works directly with quarries and suppliers in Brazil, Italy, India, Africa, and other major stone-producing regions. We maintain close relationships with reliable granite slab suppliers in Brazil, India, and Africa.

Our team personally selects the materials we bring into our showroom, ensuring quality and consistency. These relationships allow us to offer competitive pricing while remaining a trusted source for custom stone slabs and tile throughout the Bay Area.

What quartzite do you carry, and can you source specialty quartzites?

We stock a rotating selection of quartzite, including popular varieties such as Taj Mahal, Macaubas White, and Cielo. If you are searching for specialty quartzites like Madeirus (also known as Madeiras), we can typically source them through our supplier network.

Quartzite is one of the most popular natural stones due to its durability, heat resistance, and natural beauty.

Heat & Durability

Can you put hot pans directly on quartzite countertops?

Granite and quartzite are generally heat-resistant and can tolerate occasional hot pans, although using trivets is truly the answer. It is recommended as a general rule for both natural stone and engineered stone to not exceed 450-500 degrees directly. Stone expands and contracts just like engineered stone, so no surface is completely heat-resistant.

Which countertop materials are the most durable?

Quartzite and granite are among the most durable natural stone options, offering strong resistance to heat and scratching. Quartz is also highly durable but more sensitive to heat. Marble and limestone are softer and require more care but are valued for their aesthetic qualities.

Difference Between Quartz & Quartzite

What’s the difference between quartz and quartzite countertops?

Quartz countertops are engineered using crushed stone and resin, which makes them consistent in pattern and low-maintenance. Quartzite is a natural stone formed under heat and pressure, making it harder than granite and highly heat-resistant. While quartz does not require sealing, quartzite typically does. Homeowners choosing between quartz and quartzite often weigh consistency and ease of care against natural beauty and durability.

What’s the difference between granite and quartz countertops?

Granite is a natural stone with unique variation and strong heat resistance, while quartz is engineered for consistency and requires less maintenance. Granite typically needs periodic sealing, whereas quartz does not. Both are durable, but granite may be better for high-heat environments, while quartz offers a more uniform appearance.

Is quartzite better than granite for countertops?

Quartzite is often considered more durable than granite and offers a similar level of heat resistance, making it an excellent choice for kitchens. However, both materials perform very well, and the best choice usually depends on the desired appearance, maintenance preferences, and specific slab selection.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Is quartzite really maintenance-free?

Some quartzites are denser than others, but many natural stones can absorb liquids if left sitting long enough.

Does quartzite stain?

No. Quartzite is durable but still benefits from sealing and proper care to reduce staining.

Is quartzite actually harder than granite?

Taj Mahal remains popular because it combines a softer aesthetic with strong everyday durability, though sealing and proper care are still recommended.

Is Taj Mahal quartzite hard to maintain?

Many true quartzites are extremely hard and scratch-resistant, although performance varies by material and geological composition.

What cleaners should I avoid on stone countertops?

Avoid harsh or acidic cleaners such as vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or abrasive scrubs on natural stone. These can damage the sealant or surface. Instead, use pH-neutral cleaners designed specifically for stone to maintain the finish and longevity.

Do all stone countertops need to be sealed?

Most natural stone countertops, including granite, marble, and quartzite, benefit from sealing to help protect against stains and moisture. Engineered quartz does not require sealing because it is non-porous. Most but not all quartz materials list sealing as something that will void the warranty.

How often should stone countertops be sealed?

Sealing frequency depends on the material and usage. Many natural stones should be sealed once every 1–2 years, although some denser stones may require less frequent sealing. A simple water test can help determine when resealing is needed.
